Since 2009, drummer, composer and DJ Martin Lorenz has composed a series of electronic miniatures that have been released in limited editions on hand-prepared vinyl records: Sine waves, as a form of extreme resonance, are superimposed with pulses that are precisely carved into the vinyl by hand with a scalpel. The raw, percussive sounds can only be produced by brute, destructive interventions on the record, the sound-reproducing medium mutates into the actual sound generator.
With this radical sound design between analogue electronics and electromechanics, Martin Lorenz creates music from primitive sounds and signals at the basis of electronic sound generation. The elaborate manual preparation of the record emphasises its status as a cult object and fetish.
Martin Lorenz produces the records in the message salon during the vernissage and opening hours and presents them as objects in an exhibition.
Two new compositions by Martin Lorenz will be premiered in a concert at the end of the exhibition at Perla-Mode. The sound design of the prepared records will be confronted with acoustic instruments (Vera Kardos, violin/ Sebastian Hofmann, drums/ Martin Lorenz, turntables).
Martin Lorenz has been active as a percussionist in the field of contemporary and experimental music since 1999. He initiates and organises projects with various partners.
The percussionist has supplemented his arsenal of percussion instruments with electronics and expanded the spectrum of his forms of expression with installation works and music on the fringes of club culture. In January 2011, Martin Lorenz presented concerts and his newly founded music label Dumpf Edition in the field of experimental and new music at message salon.
