Fresh goods! Fresh pretzels!
Roy Menachem Markovich from Tel Aviv presents his latest sculptures, created during a two-week residency in the hotel’s studio. The artist finds his materials, such as cardboard, electronic waste, and pieces of wood, plastic, and metal, in the gold mine that is Langstrasse. The abstract, precariously cobbled-together objects are reminiscent of trophies and cups, or models for monuments and memorials, such as those found in parks, on street corners and in squares in Israel.
The sculptures are mischievously Dadaist and playful, and pose a puzzle. Each “desktop sculpture” is a statement, expressing its character through pieces of the past, through used materials that bear scratches and wounds and have been worked by hand by the artist with a saw, adhesive tape or hot glue, and screwed together with will and force. Despite all the effort, the sculptures are fragile and precarious in the present. It is no coincidence that this state of affairs is reminiscent of a society living in a reality of trauma, constant danger and uncertainty about the future.
Artist in Hotel Residence is a wonderful opportunity to cultivate long-standing friendships with artists. Roy Menachem Markovich exhibited his profoundly humorous videos, sculptures and installations in solo exhibitions in Zurich at the message salon in the legendary Perla-Mode on Langstrasse in 2012 and 2013. In 2015, he performed under the name Señor Sandwich with his unique bagel sandwich sound system at the newly opened message salon embassy on Grubenstrasse and at the message salon festival “Die Zürcher Restspiele” at the Rote Fabrik in Zurich.
On the occasion of the artist residency at the 25hours Hotel Langstrasse, message salon embassy is producing an exclusive new fanzine with Roy Menachem Markovich, which will celebrate its premiere at the Open Studio.
