“message salon caravan 1998–2000” is being sent from the Migros Museum collection to Berlin, to the art institution “BüroFriedrich”, as a work of art for the exhibition “4Free”. After an eventful journey packed onto a lorry and having been held up at customs for a while, the message salon Wohnwagen arrives in the German capital just in the nick of time. The artist Esther Eppstein travels to Berlin in high spirits, looking forward to seeing her caravan on loan at BüroFriedrich, fully operational and in action in the exhibition. But what a shock! On the day of the exhibition opening, the message salon caravan stands unpacked in the exhibition space. Esther Eppstein organises a last-minute rescue operation: artist friends of message salon, living in Berlin, help to assemble and furnish the caravan within a single day.
The exhibition’s theme: “4Free – Stadt unter dem Himmel/City under the sky – art, politics, science & aesthetic survival strategies” has, fittingly, come to fruition.
