Felipe Mujica (geb. 1974 Santiago de Chile), zeigt in der aktuellen Ausstellung “Everything that begins as comedy inevitably ends as mystery” ein formales Spiel mit Witz. In seiner Installation verwebt der Künstler unterschiedliche kulturelle Codes. Die plakativen Grafiken, als Schablone auf Glas oder als Siebdruck auf Stoff, verbinden im Raum Elemente der populären, revolutionären Wandmalerei Lateinamerikas mit psychedelischen Erinnerungsstücken der amerikanisch-europäischen Kulturgeschichte. Felipe Mujica bedient sich in seiner Rauminstallation dem Clichée der lateinamerikanischen Mystik, einer emotionalen Verbindung von Pathos und Nostalgie und zitiert die mystisch, geistige Sehnsucht nach dem Zusammenhang der Dinge.
“Everything that begins as comedy inevitably ends as mystery” (“Todo lo que empieza como comedia indefectiblemente acaba como misterio”) ist ein Satz aus dem Roman “The Savage Detectives” (“Los Detectives Salvajes”), des chilenischen Schriftstellers Roberto Bolaño. Das Buch, ein Roman über das Lebensgefühl einer neuen Dichtergeneration in Lateinamerika, war Ende der neunziger Jahre ein grosser Erfolg und gilt als eines der wichtigsten Werke der jüngeren lateinamerikanischen Literatur.
“Everything that begins as comedy inevitably ends as mystery” ist Felipe Mujicas erste Einzelausstellung in Zürich. Im September 2005 präsentierte Felipe Mujica mit Johanna Unzueta und Diego Fernandez im message salon eine gemeinsame Installation und Performance sowie einen Vortrag über die in den neunziger Jahren von Mujica und Fernandez gegründete Galeria Chilena, dem ersten artist run space in Chile nach dem Ende der Diktatur. Seit 2000 lebt Felipe Mujica mit Johanna Unzueta und dem gemeinsamen Sohn in Brooklyn, New York. Die beiden Künstler zeigen ihre Arbeiten in Galerien und Institutionen in den USA, in Lateinamerika und in Europa. Johanna Unzueta wird zeitgleich in der Zürcher Galerie “visual drug” an der Dienerstrasse, eine Einzelausstellung zeigen.

“Everything that begins as comedy inevitably ends as mystery”
The works I am showing at message salon intend to create a situation, a sort of portal into formal jokes contaminated with psychedelic and political imaginary.
Three different yet interrelated projects conform the exhibition. Weaving and clashing different examples of culture the pieces intend to leave the public in a strange in-between moment. Each work intends to become a bridge with the other works and also a bridge between the exhibition and its context. This follows my interest in creating incomplete art works and, in a way, incomplete states.
This exhibition then is a personal response to the characteristics of Perla Mode, the works have been adapted and modified since my original plan. Besides the art world and general public I have to consider that the exhibition space is located in the red light district of Zürich. My vision of the unknown (as a mental space) and the nostalgic (as history) should clash with the reality outside the windows; and this clash should leave a distance, with a specific energy, to think about.
The title of this exhibition is the final phrase of a chapter of “Los Detectives Salvajes”, a novel by Chilean writer Roberto Bolaño. (Felipe Mujica, Zürich 2008)
