Audio artist Luka Ivanović aka Lukatoyboy, born in Belgrade, based in Berlin and travelling the world, has been residing at the message salon embassy for a few days now. The artist lives in a hotel room with a view of the Langstrasse subway, the Langstrasse only murmurs mutedly here, the soundproof windows in the artist’s studio allow an endless flow of SBB trains to float choreographically past.
The artist observes what is happening in the hotel: Guests drag pieces of luggage through the fluffy hotel corridors, people meet for a drink at the soundproofed bar, pans clatter in the restaurant and past pop songs trickle by at every turn. The bartenders stir the mixer and cheerful staff at the hotel reception greet the comings and goings of businesswomen, party tourists and curious neighbours. Lukatoyboy collects the impressions and processes them into sound and text during his residency.
In his audio performances, Lukatoyboy uses many sources and media such as tape recordings, analogue synthesizers, audio guides, talk shows, walkie-talkies, sound machines, vinyl records and cassette recorders. The everyday soundscape serves him as material that he processes into soundtracks or radio features.
