Irene Düring embroiders pictures, both her own and found ones, or the embroidery needle pierces the plaster of a wall. The feminine craft of embroidery tips over into subtle aggression, causing injuries and insisting with needle pricks. Thread and needle sew broken things back together; fabrics and threads want to be touched and felt. Tights rise demanding like overly long legs towards the ceiling.
The hand that creates, feels, touches, injures and repairs again has a broader meaning in Irene Düring’s exhibition. In a selection of collected drawings and photos, the motif of hands refers to a very personal motivation – her preoccupation with the lifelong relationship with her prosthetic hand, which has been a tool and part of her body since childhood.
The materiality of textiles and the processing of fabrics and threads by hand have fascinated Irene Düring since her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and have shaped her work. In her first solo exhibition in Zurich at the message salon, Irene Düring presents an overview of her ongoing work.
