Why is an artist from the Middle East conducting research into folklore, masquerade or travesty in Zurich? What do carnival, Fasnacht and masked balls mean in the context of art; have these customs found an echo in contemporary art? Is there a tradition in Zwinglian Zurich, and if so, might this have manifested itself in the Street Parade or even in the annual exhibition at the Löwenbräu, the highlight of the season’s opening?
During his two-week stay at the message salon embassy, Jonathan Touitou intends to conduct interviews and conversations with people in Zurich. The conversations will be recorded or documented and could form the basis for further research.
To mark the opening of the Zurich galleries’ season – the cultural and social highlight of the city’s art scene – Jonathan Touitou is out and about in Zurich with Madame l’Ambassadeur, his message salon embassy zine in hand.
The artist and curator Jonathan Touitou (born in Paris in 1975, lives and works in Tel Aviv) ran the independent off-space ‘Baad Gallery’ in the south of Tel Aviv from 2012 to 2014, on the premises of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design.
Jonathan Touitou and Madame l’Ambassadeur are looking forward to meeting old and new acquaintances and to interesting, lively conversations.
