“semi eschmamp lives with his dog heinz on the 5th floor. his studio is just one floor below. but he rarely stays there. sometimes he goes for a walk with his dog. he always lets others draw. mostly unknown people are forced to scribble something on paper directly from the street. or semi leaves the door of the studio open overnight in the hope that someone will come and draw pictures. his dog doesn’t really care. he bundles up the drawings, binds them into books and gets his food in return.”
With puns, terse dialogues and a scribbled drawing style, Sämi Eschmann is very much in the tradition of the cartoon, which is dedicated to the absurdity and abysses of life in small, sharply observed scenes. Sämi Eschmann reflects the imperfect and the human; the illustrator recognises small poetic situations in our modern world that are perhaps so obvious that we would not even notice them without the artist’s filter. Sämi Eschmann humorously captures unexpected flashes of thought and the fleeting fantasies of everyday life in quick strokes on paper.
At the message salon, Sämi Eschmann is showing original drawings and his new limited edition artist’s book “leim im wind”. The artist, born in Zurich, has lived in Berlin for several years, is an actor on stage, in recording studios and in film and, more recently, a draughtsman, author and publsiher with a penchant for sculpture.
