The sculpture “Snaporaz” has been standing in the open air in the ABZ Jasminweg housing estate in Zurich Oerlikon since spring 2012. In her latest film, Swiss filmmaker and author Anne Cuneo documents the history of the creation of the sculpture by Zurich artist Marco Ganz – from the idea to the completion of the artwork and its installation at its final destination in the cooperative housing estate.
“Snaporaz in Oerlikon” shows how the classic and familiar material of wood is processed using state-of-the-art technology to create a spectacular work of art that makes a big impression with its eight metre height and impressive weight of almost eight tonnes. The film not only focuses on the artistic work of Marco Ganz, it also shows the skilled workers involved in the creative process, such as carpenters and specialists in computer-controlled woodworking machines, as well as the process of determining the special surface coating that makes the wooden sculpture weatherproof for at least thirty years.
“Snaporaz in Oerlikon” is a film document of an unusual collaboration between art and craftsmanship. Anyone who has seen the film will look at the “Snaporaz” sculpture with different eyes.
