“Trance Magazin” is a Zurich-based DIY underground fanzine for the rave, club and art communities.

Passionate ravers Moe Arnold-Eppstein and Valentina Stieger first launched ‘Trance Magazin’ in 2019 as their DIY fanzine dedicated to rave culture and community. Since then, Moe and Valentina have expanded the magazine’s scope. Trance Magazin is created during an open studio session with friends. So far, 14 issues of the fanzine have been produced at irregular intervals, in the tradition of handmade magazines.
The Trance Magazin community meets up at clubs, in studios, in art spaces or at raves. On site, there is paper, pens, scissors, stickers, magazines, leaflets, lettering kits, stamps and everything needed to create the content of a zine. At a table, everyone draws, writes and crafts together, accompanied by a live DJ set from local DJs.
The participants’ contributions are collected by Moe and Valentina, then digitised, carefully edited and laid out, photocopied and hand-stapled. Each copy of this small, limited edition becomes a unique, handmade magazine.

Esther Eppstein has invited the Trance Magazine team to produce an exclusive “message salon” edition as part of her exhibition. For the workshop, Esther Eppstein is making material from her message salon archive available for use: photos, copies, programmes, posters, laser copies, flyers …  feel free to cut, stick and get creative! Sound artists Maria Arnold-Eppstein and Noah Item will accompany the workshop with an exclusive DJ set.
The brand-new issue, “Trance Magazin, No. 15 – message salon Edition”, will then be presented on 9 January at the closing event of the exhibition “message salon so long” at Kupper Modern.

Ever since message salon opened in 1996, Esther Eppstein’s children, Moe (born 1992) and Maria (born 1994), have been part of it. In the “family-run message salon”, they have witnessed countless events, helped with setting up and working behind the bar, and have also staged their own exhibitions. “Trance Magazine – message salon Edition” is the family celebration to mark message salon’s 30th anniversary!
